Update and Upgrade

1. Updates

  • Definition: Minor releases that provide bug fixes and performance improvements.

  • Application:

    • Install updates through the Autodesk Desktop App.
    • Download hotfixes from the Autodesk Account portal.
  • Verification:

    • Check the version/build in Revit by navigating to Help > About.
    • Verify with Autodesk’s release notes to confirm the update.

2. Upgrades

  • Definition: Major version changes (e.g., Revit 2024 → Revit 2025) that introduce new features.

  • Planning:

    • Review the release notes and check system requirements for the new version.
    • Test the upgrade on sample projects before applying it to live projects.
    • Ensure third-party add-ins are compatible with the new version.
  • Process:

    • Download the new version from the Autodesk Account.
    • Install the new version alongside older versions (Autodesk allows multiple versions to coexist).
    • Use the Upgrade Tool or open files in the new version (this is an irreversible process).
  • Post-Upgrade:

    • Provide training to users on the new tools and features.
    • Reconfigure templates and families to align with the new version.
    • Verify license activation to ensure proper functionality.

3. Best Practices

  • Perform upgrades during non-critical phases of projects to minimize disruption.
  • Always archive and back up all models before starting the upgrade process.
  • Keep a record of updated templates and standards to maintain consistency.
